Pick a miner

Ravencoin uses KAWPOW, a memory-hard variant of ProgPoW designed to resist ASIC concentration. In practice that means it runs well on standard gaming GPUs — Nvidia RTX cards, AMD RX 6000/7000 series, and similar — and badly on CPUs or anything older than the last few generations. Common miners include T-Rex for Nvidia and TeamRedMiner for AMD. The setup is the same whether you're mining one card or many; the tuning is what eats the day. Modern consumer GPUs with at least 4 GB of VRAM. The algorithm is memory-hard, so VRAM bandwidth and capacity matter more than raw shader count.
On the Nvidia side, RTX 3060 Ti through RTX 4090 are the sweet spot for efficiency per watt; older 1080 Ti cards still mine but are inefficient. On the AMD side, RX 6700 XT and up are competitive. Older AMD cards (RX 580, Vega) work but the efficiency gap is meaningful. CPU mining is technically possible and never profitable; ASIC mining is not meaningfully a thing on KAWPOW by design.
Picking the miner software
For Nvidia: T-Rex is the most common; GMiner and lolMiner are widely used alternatives. For AMD: TeamRedMiner is standard, with lolMiner as a strong second. All four are free, command-line tools that take a pool URL, a wallet address, and a worker name. Download from each project's official repository or release page — mining-software clones with embedded backdoors are a known attack vector, so verify the source.

- Antivirus will flag miners as 'risky' — that's expected; whitelist the executable.
Open Electrum RVN, go to the Receive tab, click "New address", and use that as the mining payout address. A dedicated address per activity (mining, exchange withdrawals, asset receipts) makes the wallet's history tab much easier to reason about — at a glance you can see what came from where.
Pick a pool with low latency to your region, a published fee structure (1% is typical), and a payout scheme you understand (PPS for smooth payouts, PPLNS for slightly higher long-run earnings if you stay loyal). Avoid pools commanding more than ~25% of network hashrate — chain health matters even if you only care about your own payouts. See the mining-pools guide for the full criteria checklist.
Configuring the miner
All KAWPOW miners take a similar configuration: pool URL (usually stratum+tcp://pool.example:port), wallet address as the username, an arbitrary worker name, and any tuning flags. Start with the example config from the miner's README, swap in your pool and address, and run it. Once it's hashing and the pool dashboard shows your worker online, move to tuning.
Stock clocks are rarely the efficiency sweet spot. Most modern GPUs benefit from a small undervolt (lower power limit, modest core clock reduction, memory clock unchanged or slightly increased), which drops watts noticeably while losing only a small percentage of hashrate. The result is higher hash-per-watt and lower temperatures, both of which extend card lifetime. Fans should sit in the 50-70% range for steady operation; 100% fans wear bearings out fast.
After the first payout interval (often once per day at a threshold balance), the pool dashboard should show a sent transaction with a TXID. Paste that TXID into a public Ravencoin block explorer to confirm the on-chain transfer, and check your Electrum RVN wallet — the incoming amount should match. Persistent mismatch between pool dashboard and on-chain reality is the single biggest red flag for a pool that is about to stop paying out.
Tuning for stability rather than peak hashrate
The highest stable hashrate is almost always lower than the highest peak hashrate. A rig that crashes once a day loses more to downtime than it gains from a 3% overclock. Start with stock settings, confirm 24 hours of clean running, then make one change at a time — memory clock, core clock, power limit — and monitor for the next day. Document every change; an undocumented "optimal" config is the same as no config the next time the driver updates.
Profitability is hashrate divided by power, not hashrate alone. A card at 220W producing 95% of the hashrate of the same card at 320W is the better mining card by every economic measure that matters. Heat compounds the problem: a rig running hot kills its own cards over months and stresses any non-mining hardware in the same room. Cap power early, run cool, and the rig pays back longer.
